UAE citizens currently enjoy visa-free travel to Europe’s Schengen Area. Starting in Q4 2026, you’ll need an ETIAS travel authorisation before boarding your flight. It’s not a visa — it’s a quick online screening that costs €20 (~82 AED) and takes minutes to complete.

Why Do UAE Citizens Need ETIAS?
The UAE is one of 59 countries whose citizens can currently enter Europe’s Schengen Area without a visa. That visa-free access isn’t going away — but starting in late 2026, it comes with an extra step.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is the EU’s new pre-screening system for visa-exempt travellers. Think of it as Europe’s version of the US ESTA or the new UK ETA. Before you board a flight to Paris, Milan, or Zurich, the system runs a quick background check against EU security databases. If approved — and the vast majority of applicants will be — you’re cleared to travel.
The key point for Emirati travellers: ETIAS is not a visa. It doesn’t replace your visa-free status. It’s an additional security layer that takes minutes to complete online. No embassy visit, no documents to mail, no interview.
How to Apply for ETIAS from the UAE
When the system launches in Q4 2026, the application process will be entirely online through the official EU portal at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Here’s what to expect:
Where Can Emiratis Travel with ETIAS?
A single ETIAS authorisation covers all 30 ETIAS countries. That includes every popular European destination that Emirati travellers frequent:
- France — Paris, the French Riviera, shopping and culture
- Italy — Milan, Rome, Venice, Lake Como
- Switzerland — Geneva, Zurich, the Swiss Alps
- Spain — Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella
- Germany — Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin
- Austria — Vienna, Salzburg
- Netherlands — Amsterdam
- Greece — Athens, Santorini, Mykonos
You can visit multiple countries on a single ETIAS — no need to apply separately for each one. Fly into Paris, train to Switzerland, drive to Italy, all on the same authorisation.
ETIAS vs. UK ETA: What UAE Travellers Need to Know
Many Emirati travellers visit both the UK and continental Europe on the same trip. Here’s how the two systems compare:
| Feature | ETIAS (Europe) | UK ETA |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | €20 (~82 AED) | £10 (~47 AED) |
| Validity | 3 years | 2 years |
| Countries covered | 30 (Schengen + Cyprus) | 1 (UK only) |
| Maximum stay | 90 days per 180-day period | 6 months per visit |
| Application | Online portal | App or website |
| Processing time | Minutes to 96 hours | Up to 3 working days |
| Launch for UAE citizens | Q4 2026 | February 25, 2026 (live now) |
| Mandatory? | Yes, after transition period | Yes, since Feb 25, 2026 |
Bottom line: If you’re visiting both London and Europe, budget about 130 AED total (€20 + £10) and apply for both authorisations before your trip.
The 90/180-Day Rule for UAE Citizens
Having ETIAS doesn’t change the Schengen 90/180-day rule. As an Emirati passport holder, you can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period.
- The clock starts on your first day of entry and rolls forward continuously
- All days in any Schengen country count toward the same 90-day total
- After using 90 days, you must leave the Schengen Area for at least 90 days before returning
- Time in the UK, Ireland, or non-Schengen countries does NOT count toward your 90 days
For Emirati travellers who split time between the Gulf, UK, and Europe throughout the year, tracking your Schengen days is important. Use our free Schengen Calculator to count your days and stay within the limit.
Important Notes for Emirati Travellers
Dual Nationality
If you hold both a UAE passport and an EU/Schengen country passport, you do NOT need ETIAS. Simply use your EU passport to enter and exit Europe. However, if your second passport is from a non-EU country, you’ll need ETIAS linked to whichever passport you use to enter Europe.
Travelling with Family
Every traveller needs their own ETIAS — including children and elderly family members. Children under 18 and adults over 70 apply for free; a parent or guardian submits on behalf of minors. A family of two adults and three children under 18 would pay €40 total (2 × €20).
Business Travel
ETIAS covers short business trips (meetings, conferences, negotiations) for up to 90 days. It does NOT cover employment or long-term business activities. If you’re establishing a business presence in Europe, you’ll need a work or business visa instead.
Medical Travel
Emirati travellers seeking medical treatment in Europe can use ETIAS for short-term medical visits of up to 90 days. Longer medical stays may require a specific visa. ETIAS does not include or replace travel insurance — arrange comprehensive medical coverage separately.
Transit Through Europe
If your flight connects through a Schengen country (e.g., transiting through Frankfurt or Amsterdam), you will need ETIAS even if you’re not leaving the airport, as you’re technically entering the Schengen Area. ETIAS is required for all entries, including transit.
Avoid ETIAS Scams
This is particularly important for UAE-based travellers, as scam websites actively target Gulf audiences with Arabic-language ads on social media and Google. Watch for sites charging €50–100+ for what should be a €20 process, or claiming to offer “priority processing” or “guaranteed approval.”
When Should UAE Citizens Apply?
- Now (2026): No action needed. ETIAS is not yet live. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond any planned travel to Europe in late 2026 or 2027.
- Q4 2026 (launch): The EU will announce the exact launch date several months in advance. Apply at least 72 hours before your first trip.
- Six-month transition period: After launch, there’s a grace period where ETIAS is encouraged but not required. You won’t be denied entry solely for lacking it during this window.
- After the transition period: ETIAS becomes mandatory. No authorisation, no boarding.

Can UAE citizens still enter Europe without a visa after ETIAS launches?
Yes. ETIAS is not a visa — it’s a travel authorisation that works alongside your existing visa-free access. You won’t need to visit an embassy, attend an interview, or submit physical documents. Your visa-exempt status remains the same.
How much does ETIAS cost for Emirati citizens?
The application fee is €20 (~82 AED) for travellers aged 18–70. Children under 18 and adults over 70 apply for free. The fee is non-refundable.
Do I need both ETIAS and a UK ETA for a London-Paris trip?
Yes. ETIAS covers the 30 Schengen and EU countries including France. The UK has its own system — the UK ETA (£10), which became mandatory for UAE citizens on February 25, 2026. You need both for a trip that includes the UK and continental Europe.
Does ETIAS cover transit through European airports?
Yes. If your flight connects through a Schengen-area airport — even if you’re not leaving the terminal — you’ll need a valid ETIAS. Transit passengers technically enter the Schengen zone when they land.
Can I apply for ETIAS now from the UAE?
No. ETIAS launches in Q4 2026. Any website currently offering ETIAS applications is either a scam or a third-party service that cannot process real applications yet. Only apply through the official EU portal once it launches.
I have a UAE residence visa but I’m not Emirati. Do I need ETIAS?
It depends on your passport, not your residency. ETIAS is based on nationality. If your passport is from a visa-exempt country (e.g., US, UK, Canada, Australia), you’ll need ETIAS. If your passport is from a country that requires a Schengen visa (e.g., India, Pakistan, Philippines), ETIAS doesn’t apply — you need a Schengen visa instead.
How long can UAE citizens stay in Europe with ETIAS?
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. This is the same rule that applies now — ETIAS doesn’t change the duration of your allowed stay.
What if my ETIAS application is denied?
Denials are expected to be rare. If denied, you’ll receive an explanation and can appeal to the national authority of the country that made the decision. You can also correct any errors and submit a new application (paying €20 again).
