ETIAS for South Koreans 2026: Complete Guide

Last Updated: July 2026

As of July 2026, ETIAS is not yet live — and the previously confirmed Q4 2026 launch is under review, with 2027 now the likely outcome. South Korean passport holders currently travel to Europe with just a passport, as before. When ETIAS eventually launches, Korean citizens will need this authorisation (€20, valid 3 years) for 30 European countries. Korea runs its own K-ETA system for incoming visitors, so the concept will already be familiar — Europe is simply introducing the same pre-travel screening for Koreans heading the other way.

⚠️ July 2026 Update: ETIAS Q4 2026 Launch on Hold

In mid-July 2026, the EU quietly removed the “last quarter of 2026” launch target from the official ETIAS website. Financial Times reporting cited eu-LISA (the EU agency building ETIAS) as having internally concluded a 2026 launch is no longer feasible.

A revised timeline is expected after eu-LISA’s September 2026 board meeting. A 2027 launch is now the most likely outcome. For now, Korean travellers head to Europe exactly as before — passport only, no ETIAS required. See our ETIAS launch date tracker for the running record.

🛂 Visiting the UK Too? You’ll Need a Separate UK ETA

Most Korean travellers visiting Europe also stop in the UK — and the UK requires its own pre-travel authorisation, the UK ETA (£20, valid 2 years). It’s separate from ETIAS and required for entry to Britain. iVisa handles UK ETA applications end-to-end, plus Korean passport services, expedited processing, and any other travel document you need for your trip.

When ETIAS eventually launches, iVisa will handle ETIAS applications too.

Do South Koreans Need a Visa for Europe in 2026?

No — and that isn’t changing. South Korean passport holders do not need a visa for short stays in Europe, and ETIAS does not change that. The Korean passport consistently ranks among the world’s most powerful, with visa-free access to all 30 ETIAS countries.

What IS changing (once ETIAS launches) is that you’ll need to complete a quick online authorisation before your trip. South Koreans are actually well-placed to understand ETIAS — Korea already runs its own K-ETA system, which requires visa-exempt foreign visitors to get pre-approved before flying to Korea. ETIAS works on the same principle, just applied in reverse.

ℹ️ Bottom line: You can still visit Europe without a visa. When ETIAS eventually launches (2027 likely), you’ll fill out a 10-minute online form and pay €20 (~₩29,000) — the same concept as Korea’s own K-ETA, applied in reverse. Until then, nothing changes for Korean travellers.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a pre-travel screening system that checks visitors from visa-exempt countries against EU security databases before they board a flight, ferry, or train to Europe.

It is not a visa. No embassy appointment, no supporting documents, no interview. It’s an online form that takes about 10 minutes, costs €20 (~₩29,000), and is valid for three years of unlimited trips — as long as each stay respects the 90-day limit.

Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines check it automatically at check-in. No printout required.

ETIAS vs. Korea’s K-ETA: Your Own System, Applied in Reverse

South Korea introduced its K-ETA in 2021 — requiring visa-exempt foreign visitors to get pre-screened before arriving in Korea. The EU modelled ETIAS on systems like K-ETA and the US ESTA. The structural logic is identical.

How to Apply for ETIAS (Step by Step)

1 Go to the official EU ETIAS portal. The official website will be at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The portal is not yet open — ETIAS launches when it launches (2027 likely). Do not use any third-party site — scam services are already operating.
2 Enter your passport details. You’ll need a South Korean passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe.
3 Answer background questions. Criminal history, previous immigration violations, travel to conflict zones, basic health questions. For most Korean applicants, every answer will be “no.”
4 Indicate your first country of entry. For informational purposes only — your ETIAS covers all 30 countries regardless of where you enter first.
5 Pay the €20 fee. Approximately ₩29,000. By credit or debit card. Under-18s and over-70s pay nothing but still need to apply.
6 Receive your decision. Most approved within minutes. A small percentage may require manual review up to 30 days. Apply well before travel.
⚠️ Scam Warning: ETIAS is not yet live. Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications for Koreans is not legitimate. With the launch pushed to a likely 2027, scam sites will remain a problem for longer. Only apply through the official EU portal once the system launches.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

The 90/180-Day Rule for Korean Travellers

ETIAS doesn’t change how long you can stay. The Schengen rule already in place still applies: up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area.

For Korean travellers combining Europe with the UK, days spent in the UK do not count toward your Schengen 90-day total — the two systems are entirely separate. A week in London followed by 10 days in France uses only 10 of your 90 Schengen days.

Use our free Schengen Calculator to plan your days. For the full explanation see our 90/180-Day Rule Guide.

⚠️ EES is already live: Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational across all Schengen borders as of April 2026, though its summer 2026 rollout has faced significant queue issues at major airports, with waits of 2–5 hours at peak times. It records every Schengen entry and exit via biometric scan — fingerprints and facial recognition replace passport stamps. Overstays are now tracked automatically.

🛡️ Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Your Europe Trip

ETIAS authorises your entry, but it doesn’t cover a medical emergency, a travel delay, or lost luggage. SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance covers emergency medical treatment across 180+ countries, travel delays, and lost checked luggage — with no long-term commitment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does ETIAS start for South Koreans?

As of July 2026, no confirmed start date exists. The Q4 2026 target that had been on the official EU ETIAS page was removed in mid-July 2026 following Financial Times reporting that eu-LISA had concluded a 2026 launch was no longer feasible. A revised timeline is expected after eu-LISA’s September 2026 board meeting, with 2027 the most likely outcome. See our launch date tracker for updates.

Can South Koreans apply for ETIAS today?

No. The ETIAS system is not yet operational. Applications will open shortly before the system officially goes live — no confirmed date exists. Until then, Korean travellers head to Europe exactly as before — with just a passport. Any website currently claiming to accept ETIAS applications is a scam.

How much does ETIAS cost in Korean won?

The fee is €20, approximately ₩29,000. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to complete the application.

Is ETIAS similar to Korea’s K-ETA?

Yes — it’s essentially the same concept applied in reverse. Korea requires visa-exempt foreign visitors to get pre-screened via K-ETA before arrival. ETIAS is Europe doing the same thing to Koreans visiting Europe.

Do I need ETIAS for a stopover in Europe?

If your layover requires passing through border control in a Schengen country, yes. If you remain in the international transit zone, no ETIAS is required.

Do children need ETIAS?

Yes. Every traveller needs their own ETIAS regardless of age. Parents can apply on behalf of minors. Children under 18 are exempt from the €20 fee.

Can I work or study in Europe with ETIAS?

No. ETIAS covers short-term visits for tourism, business, and transit only — up to 90 days. To work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit.

Does ETIAS cover the UK?

No. The UK requires a separate UK ETA (£20, valid 2 years). A combined Korea → UK → Europe trip requires both a UK ETA and an ETIAS.

What if my ETIAS is denied?

You’ll receive a reason and can appeal. You may also apply for a full Schengen visa through a European embassy. See: Can You Be Denied ETIAS?
