What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an automated pre-screening system launched by the European Union to strengthen border security without removing visa-free travel for low-risk countries like Chile. Before flying or arriving at any Schengen border crossing, you’ll complete a short online application — similar to the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA.
ETIAS is not a visa. It does not change how long you can stay in Europe or which countries you can visit. It is a background check run against EU and international security databases before you travel.
Do All Chileans Need ETIAS?
Most Chilean passport holders will need ETIAS once the system is operational. Exceptions include:
- EU/Schengen dual citizens: If you hold a German, Spanish, Italian, Croatian, or any other EU passport alongside your Chilean passport, you travel on your EU document and need no ETIAS. For Chileans, the most visited Schengen countries tend to be Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Portugal — all covered by a single ETIAS.

The 90/180-Day Rule — What Chileans Need to Know
ETIAS does not extend your stay rights. Chileans remain subject to the 90/180-day rule: a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area. Days in Spain count the same as days in Germany or Italy — it is a combined total across all Schengen countries, not per country.
