ETIAS for Brazilians 2026: Complete Guide

Last Updated: March 2026

Starting in late 2026, Brazilian citizens will need a digital authorisation called ETIAS before visiting most of Europe. If you’ve helped foreign visitors apply for Brazil’s e-Visa, the concept is similar — Europe is now introducing pre-travel screening for Brazilians heading the other way.

Do Brazilians Need a Visa for Europe in 2026?

No — and that isn’t changing. Brazilian citizens have enjoyed visa-free access to the Schengen Area for decades, and ETIAS does not change that status.

What IS changing is that starting in late 2026, you’ll need to complete a quick online authorisation before your trip. The process is straightforward: fill out a 10-minute form, pay €20 (~R$110), receive approval within minutes, and travel. Your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport for three years.

Think of it like the US ESTA — if you’ve ever applied to visit the United States, ETIAS works the same way, just for 30 European countries at once.

ℹ️ Bottom line: You can still visit Europe without a visa. You just need to complete a 10-minute online form and pay €20 (~R$110) before you go.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a pre-travel screening system that checks visitors from visa-exempt countries — including Brazil — against EU security databases before they board a flight, ferry, or train to Europe.

It is not a visa. There’s no embassy appointment, no supporting documents, no interview. It’s an online form that takes about 10 minutes, costs €20 (~R$110), and is valid for three years of unlimited trips — as long as each stay respects the 90-day limit.

Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines check it automatically at check-in. No printout needed.

ETIAS vs. US ESTA: A System Brazilians Already Know

Many Brazilians travel to the United States and are familiar with the ESTA — the electronic authorisation required before flying to the US. ETIAS works on exactly the same principle, applied to Europe instead of the United States, and covering 30 countries instead of one.

How to Apply for ETIAS (Step by Step)

1 Go to the official EU ETIAS portal. The official website will be at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The portal opens in Q4 2026. Do not use any third-party site.
2 Enter your passport details. You’ll need a Brazilian passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe.
3 Answer background questions. Criminal history, previous immigration violations, travel to conflict zones, basic health questions. For most Brazilian applicants, every answer will be “no.”
4 Indicate your first country of entry. For informational purposes only — your ETIAS covers all 30 countries regardless of where you enter first.
5 Pay the €20 fee. Approximately R$110. By credit or debit card. Under-18s and over-70s pay nothing but still need to apply.
6 Receive your decision. Most approved within minutes. A small percentage may require manual review up to 30 days. Apply well before travel.
⚠️ Scam Warning: ETIAS is not yet live. Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications for Brazilians is not legitimate. Only apply through the official EU portal once the system launches in Q4 2026.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

ETIAS covers 30 European countries — the 29 Schengen Area member states plus Cyprus. One authorisation covers all of them.

🇦🇹 Austria 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇨🇾 Cyprus 🇨🇿 Czechia 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇩🇪 Germany 🇬🇷 Greece 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇲🇹 Malta 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇷🇴 Romania 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland

Countries That Do NOT Require ETIAS

Country ETIAS Required? What Brazilians Need
🇬🇧 United KingdomNoUK ETA (£10, valid 2 years)
🇮🇪 IrelandNoPassport only (visa-free up to 90 days)
🇦🇱 AlbaniaNoPassport only (visa-free up to 90 days)
🇷🇸 SerbiaNoPassport only (visa-free up to 90 days)
🇹🇷 TurkeyNoPassport only (visa-free up to 90 days)
💡 Portugal note: Portugal is a top destination for Brazilians due to shared language and strong cultural ties — and it’s fully covered by ETIAS. One authorisation gets you into Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and every other Schengen country on the same trip.

The 90/180-Day Rule for Brazilians

ETIAS doesn’t change how long you can stay. The existing Schengen rule still applies: up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area.

For Brazilians combining Europe with a UK stop, days spent in the UK do not count toward your Schengen 90-day total. A week in London followed by 10 days in Portugal uses only 10 of your 90 Schengen days.

Use our free Schengen Calculator to plan your days. For the full explanation see our 90/180-Day Rule Guide.

⚠️ EES is already live: Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched in October 2025. It records every Schengen entry and exit via biometric scan. Overstays are now tracked automatically — the days of relying on unstamped passports are over.

Dual Citizens: Brazil + EU Country

Brazil permits dual nationality. If you hold both a Brazilian passport and an EU or Schengen country passport — Italian, Portuguese, German, Spanish, and others are common among Brazilians with European ancestry — you do not need ETIAS. Simply enter Europe on your EU passport.

ℹ️ Italian and Portuguese descent: Many Brazilians are eligible for Italian or Portuguese citizenship through ancestry (jus sanguinis). If you hold or are eligible for an EU passport, you can enter Europe without ETIAS and without any 90-day limit.

How Much Does ETIAS Cost in Brazilian Reais?

  • Adults (18–70): €20 (~R$110)
  • Under 18: Free (application still required)
  • Over 70: Free (application still required)

How much does ETIAS cost in Brazilian reais?
The fee is €20, approximately R$110. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to complete the application.

Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt countries like Brazil. As a Brazilian, you need ETIAS — not a Schengen visa — for short stays. See our guide: Schengen Visa vs. ETIAS.

Do I need ETIAS for a stopover in Europe?
If your layover requires passing through border control in a Schengen country, yes. If you remain in the international transit zone, no ETIAS is required.

No. ETIAS covers short-term visits for tourism, business, and transit only — up to 90 days. To work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit.

Does ETIAS cover Portugal?
Yes. Portugal is a full Schengen member and is covered by ETIAS. One authorisation covers Portugal plus all other 29 ETIAS countries.

What if my ETIAS is denied?
You’ll receive a reason and can appeal. You may also apply for a full Schengen visa through a European embassy. See: Can You Be Denied ETIAS?
