ETIAS for US Citizens 2026: Launch Date, Cost & How to Apply

Last Updated: October 2026

US citizens will need ETIAS — Europe’s new pre-travel authorisation — once it launches.

⚠️ October 2026 Update: ETIAS Is Not Yet in Operation

ETIAS is not yet in operation, and no applications are being collected. The European Commission’s April 2026 guidance said ETIAS was scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026 and that the exact start date would be communicated later in the year. As of 26 October 2026 no start date has been announced.

The Commission says it will announce the start date several months before launch. You do not need ETIAS to travel to Europe today. See our ETIAS launch date tracker for the running record.

🛂 Visiting the UK Too? You’ll Need a Separate UK ETA

Most US travelers visiting Europe also include the UK — and the UK requires its own pre-travel authorization called the UK ETA (£20, valid 2 years). It’s separate from ETIAS and has been required for US citizens since January 2025. iVisa handles UK ETA applications end-to-end, plus other travel documents you might need for the rest of your trip.

When ETIAS eventually launches, iVisa will handle ETIAS applications too.

Do Americans Need a Visa for Europe in 2026?

No — and that isn’t changing. Americans do not need a visa for short stays in Europe, and ETIAS does not change that. Our guide to traveling to Europe without a visa as an American covers everything you need for a 2026 trip.

What IS changing (once ETIAS launches) is that you’ll need to complete a quick online authorization before your trip. Think of ETIAS as Europe’s version of the ESTA — the same system Americans have required foreign visitors to complete before entering the United States since 2009.

If you’ve ever helped a friend fill out an ESTA to visit the US, the ETIAS process will feel familiar. Short online form, small fee, near-instant approval, linked to your passport for three years.

What Exactly Is ETIAS?

ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a pre-travel screening system for citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to Europe — including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and around 60 others. The system cross-checks your passport details against security databases before you travel. It’s designed to enhance border security while keeping travel easy for low-risk visitors.

ETIAS is NOT a visa. The differences matter:

How to Apply for ETIAS as a US Citizen

The system isn’t accepting applications yet — it will open when ETIAS officially launches, and no start date has been announced. Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications for Americans is a scam. When the system goes live, here’s the process:

What You’ll Need

  • Your US passport (valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe)
  • An email address
  • A credit or debit card for the €20 fee
  • About 10 minutes
1 Go to the official ETIAS website. The EU will launch a dedicated portal at travel-europe.europa.eu. We’ll link the live URL here the moment it goes live.
2 Fill out the application form. Personal details, passport information, travel plans, basic security and health questions — similar to what you’d complete for a US ESTA.
3 Pay the €20 fee. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee.
4 Receive your authorization. Most applications are approved within minutes. In some cases, additional processing can take up to 30 days.
5 Travel. Your ETIAS is linked to your passport electronically — no need to print anything. Airlines will verify your ETIAS status at check-in.

For a full breakdown of what to expect, see our ETIAS Application Process guide.

⚠️ Scam alert: Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications is a scam. ETIAS is not yet in operation and no start date has been announced. Do not pay anyone for an ETIAS application until the official EU portal launches.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

One ETIAS covers all 30 countries. You don’t need a separate ETIAS for Spain, France, Italy, Germany, or any other country in the system — a single approved application lets you travel across all of them during its 3-year validity, subject to the 90/180-day rule.

ETIAS covers 30 European countries — all 29 Schengen Area members plus Cyprus.

The full list: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

ℹ️ Notable countries that do NOT require ETIAS: The United Kingdom, Ireland, Turkey, and the Balkan states (Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Kosovo). These have their own separate entry requirements. Use our Europe Travel Planner to see rules for each country.

ETIAS and the 90/180-Day Rule

ETIAS does not change the existing stay limits. As a US citizen, you can still visit ETIAS countries for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day rolling period — the same Schengen 90/180-day rule that already applies to Americans today.

  • All 29 Schengen countries share ONE clock. 30 days in France + 30 days in Italy + 30 days in Spain = 90 days used.
  • It’s a rolling window, not a calendar reset. Use our Schengen Calculator to track your days.
  • Non-Schengen countries don’t count. Time in the UK, Balkans, or Turkey does NOT eat into your 90 Schengen days.

Check Your Passport Now

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Europe, and less than 10 years old on your entry date. Routine US passport renewals take several weeks, so check the State Department’s current processing times and, if your passport expires within the next 18 months, renew it now.

💡 Pro tip: Your ETIAS is tied to your passport number. If you renew your passport before a trip, you’ll need a new ETIAS — even if the original ETIAS hasn’t expired yet.

🛡️ Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Your Europe Trip

While you’re in trip-prep mode: ETIAS covers your entry authorization, but it doesn’t cover a medical emergency, a travel delay, or lost luggage. SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance covers emergency medical treatment across 180+ countries, travel delays, and lost checked luggage — with no long-term commitment required.

ETIAS and Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES)

ETIAS will work alongside Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaced passport stamps and has been fully operational since April 2026. On your first entry, your fingerprints and a facial image are registered at a kiosk or by a border guard, and every entry and exit after that is recorded digitally so the system can track your 90/180 days. Queues were long at some airports during the summer 2026 peak, so allow extra time on your first entry. Once ETIAS goes live, US travelers will need both: ETIAS authorization before you fly, and EES registration at the border.

7 Common Mistakes Americans Make About ETIAS

  1. “I need a visa now.” No. ETIAS isn’t live yet. Until it launches, you travel to Europe exactly as before — passport only.
  2. “ETIAS is a visa.” It’s not. It’s a travel authorization, like the ESTA.
  3. “I need a separate ETIAS for each country.” One ETIAS covers all 30 countries for 3 years.
  4. “My ETIAS guarantees entry.” ETIAS is pre-authorization — the border officer still makes the final call.
  5. “I can stay as long as I want with ETIAS.” ETIAS doesn’t extend your stay. The 90/180-day limit still applies.
  6. “I should apply for ETIAS now.” You can’t — and any site claiming otherwise is a scam.
  7. “ETIAS applies to all of Europe.” It covers 30 countries. The UK, Ireland, Turkey, and the Balkans have separate rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do US citizens need ETIAS?

Yes, but not yet. ETIAS is not yet in operation and no start date has been announced. Once live, all US citizens will need an approved ETIAS authorization before traveling to any of the 30 ETIAS countries in Europe. ETIAS costs €20, takes about 10 minutes online, and is valid for 3 years. It is not a visa — Americans still travel visa-free.

Can Americans apply for ETIAS right now?

No. The ETIAS system is not yet live. Applications will open when ETIAS officially launches — no specific date has been announced. Until then, Americans travel to Europe exactly as before — with just a passport. Any website claiming to process ETIAS applications today is a scam.

When exactly does ETIAS start for Americans?

No start date has been announced and ETIAS is not yet in operation. The European Commission’s April 2026 guidance said ETIAS was scheduled for the last quarter of 2026 and that the exact start date would be communicated later in the year. See our launch date tracker for updates.

How much does ETIAS cost for US citizens?

€20 per application. Valid for 3 years or until your passport expires. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee.

Can Americans be denied ETIAS?

It’s possible but unlikely. Reasons for denial include criminal history, previous immigration violations, or security concerns. The vast majority of US applicants are expected to be approved within minutes. If denied, you can appeal or reapply.

Do US citizens need ETIAS for the UK?

No. The UK is not part of the ETIAS system or the Schengen Area. US citizens visiting the UK need a separate UK ETA (£20), a different pre-travel authorization that US citizens have needed since January 2025.

Do kids need ETIAS too?

Yes — every traveler needs their own ETIAS, including children. However, travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the €20 fee.

What if my passport expires during my ETIAS validity?

Your ETIAS becomes invalid when your passport expires, even if the 3-year ETIAS period hasn’t ended. You’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS with your new passport.

Can I work in Europe with ETIAS?

No. ETIAS is for short-term tourism and business visits only — up to 90 days. To work in Europe, you need a work visa or residence permit from the specific country.
