🛂 Need Other Travel Authorizations While You Wait for ETIAS?
ETIAS applications aren’t open yet — the portal launches Q4 2026, and we’ll activate the iVisa ETIAS concierge option here the moment it does. In the meantime, if your trip needs other authorizations alongside ETIAS, iVisa handles them all from one dashboard:
- UK ETA — required for visa-exempt visitors to Britain (live now, £20)
- Schengen visa — if your nationality requires a visa rather than ETIAS
- US ESTA — for return travel through or to the US
- Other travel documents — embassy registration, transit visas, and more
Setting up an iVisa account now means one less step when the ETIAS portal opens — your details are already saved.
Apply with iVisa →What Do You Need Before You Apply?
ETIAS requires no supporting documents — only two things before you start:
- A valid passport from an ETIAS-eligible country. Your authorization is electronically linked to this passport — you must travel with the same one.
- A credit or debit card for the €20 fee. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee but must still complete the application.
Check your passport expiry date before applying. Your passport must remain valid for the full duration of your stay — most Schengen countries recommend at least 3 months of validity beyond your planned departure date.
Step 1: Access the Official ETIAS Portal
Applications are accepted exclusively at the official EU ETIAS website: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. According to the European Commission, this is the only legitimate application channel. There is no official fee beyond the €20 paid directly at the portal.
⚠️ Scam Warning: Third-party sites already charge €50–€100 for “ETIAS assistance” without disclosing the markup. The only legitimate ETIAS fee paid to the EU is €20 at the official portal. Authorized concierge services like iVisa are different — they openly disclose their service fee on top of the €20 and provide a real value-add (support, error checking, family bundling). See: ETIAS Scams: How to Spot Fake Sites
Step 2: Complete Your Personal Information
The ETIAS form collects: full legal name as it appears on your passport, date and place of birth, nationality and passport number, passport issue and expiry dates, home address and contact email, current occupation, and your first intended country of entry into the Schengen Area.
Check every field carefully before proceeding. A mismatch between your application and your passport — even a single character — can delay or invalidate your authorization at the border. Passport-number typos are the most common reason ETIAS applications get flagged for manual review.
Step 3: Answer the Security Questions
ETIAS includes a required set of yes/no questions covering: serious criminal convictions, prior travel to conflict zones in the past 10 years, previous refusals of entry or visa to any country, and certain communicable diseases as defined by EU health authorities.
Responses are automatically cross-checked against the Schengen Information System (SIS), Europol, and Interpol databases. For the overwhelming majority of applicants, all answers are “no” and the total form time is under 10 minutes.
✅ Note: ETIAS does not collect biometric data such as fingerprints or facial scans. That happens separately at the border as part of the Entry/Exit System (EES), which began rolling out in October 2025.
Step 4: Pay the €20 Fee
Payment is made by credit or debit card at the end of the form. The fee applies per person — each traveler needs their own ETIAS. You can apply on behalf of others (children, elderly relatives) by signing a declaration of representation within the application. Applicants under 18 or over 70 complete the full application but are not charged.
Step 5: How Long Does ETIAS Approval Take?
The European Commission states that the majority of ETIAS applications will be processed automatically. Expected timelines:
- Within minutes — the vast majority of applicants; authorization confirmed by email
- Up to 96 hours — applications flagged for manual review by the ETIAS Central Unit
- Up to 14 days — cases where additional information or documentation is requested
- Up to 30 days — cases requiring an interview (extremely rare)
Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your departure date to leave a buffer for manual review. Do not wait until the day before travel — airlines check ETIAS status before boarding, so an unprocessed application means you don’t fly.
Step 6: Travel with Your Authorization
Your ETIAS arrives by email and is electronically linked to your passport. You do not need to print a separate document — border officers verify the authorization digitally when scanning your passport. Save your confirmation email as a backup in case of technical issues at the border.
How Long Is ETIAS Valid?
ETIAS is valid for 3 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. One authorization covers unlimited trips to all 30 ETIAS countries during the validity period, provided each individual stay respects the Schengen 90/180-day rule. If you renew your passport, you must apply for a new ETIAS linked to the new passport number — even if the original ETIAS hasn’t expired yet.
What If Your ETIAS Is Denied?
If your ETIAS application is refused, you will receive a written explanation and have the right to appeal to the responsible EU member state. The European Commission expects denial rates to be low. Common reasons include passport issues, prior immigration violations, or matches against EU security databases. Most denials are appealable, and in some cases applying for a full Schengen visa is the alternative route. See our complete guide: Can You Be Denied ETIAS? Reasons, Appeals, and What to Do.
🛂 A Denied ETIAS Doesn’t Mean You Can’t Visit Europe
A Schengen visa may still be an option. iVisa can help you apply for one as an alternative route.

How do I apply for ETIAS?
You apply for ETIAS online at the official EU portal at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Complete the form (under 10 minutes), pay the €20 fee with a credit or debit card, and receive your authorization by email — usually within minutes. No embassy visit, no document upload, no supporting paperwork required. As of May 2026, the portal has not yet opened; ETIAS launches Q4 2026.
Where do I apply for ETIAS?
Only at the official EU portal: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. This is the sole legitimate channel. Authorized concierge services like iVisa can help you apply, but they submit to the same EU portal on your behalf. Avoid any third-party site that doesn’t disclose its service fee separately from the €20 EU fee.
Is there a way to get help applying for ETIAS?
Yes. Authorized concierge services like iVisa offer a guided application for an additional service fee on top of the €20 EU fee. They handle form pre-fill, error validation, family bundling, and provide customer support. Most travelers can complete the application directly at the official portal without help, but a guided service is useful for groups, families, or anyone who wants extra assurance.
What’s the official ETIAS website?
travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — the only legitimate EU ETIAS application portal. Bookmark this when you start your application. Any other site claiming to be “the official ETIAS website” is not the EU portal.
Can I apply for ETIAS on behalf of someone else?
Yes. You can complete the ETIAS application on behalf of a child, elderly relative, or travel companion by signing a declaration of representation within the form. Each person still requires their own individual authorization.
Do I need a separate ETIAS for each Schengen country I visit?
No. One ETIAS covers all 30 participating countries for its full validity period. You do not need to reapply when crossing between Schengen countries during a single trip or across multiple trips.
What if my travel plans change after I apply?
ETIAS is not tied to specific travel dates — only to your passport. If your plans change, the authorization remains valid for any future trip within the 3-year validity window.
Does ETIAS replace the Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS applies only to nationals of visa-exempt countries. If your nationality currently requires a Schengen visa to enter Europe, ETIAS does not apply to you — a full Schengen visa is still required.
Can I apply for ETIAS right now?
No. As of May 2026, the ETIAS application portal is not yet open. The European Commission will announce the launch date several months in advance of the Q4 2026 launch. Track updates: ETIAS Launch Date: Latest Updates
