⚠️ August 2026 Update: ETIAS Launch Now Expected in 2027
In mid-July 2026, the EU quietly removed the “last quarter of 2026” launch target from the official ETIAS website. Financial Times reporting cited eu-LISA (the EU agency building ETIAS) as having internally concluded a 2026 launch is no longer feasible.
A revised timeline is expected after eu-LISA’s September 2026 board meeting. A 2027 launch is now the most likely outcome. For now, visa-exempt travellers head to Europe with just a passport, as before. See our launch date tracker.

What Is ETIAS and Why Does It Matter?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is Europe’s new pre-travel authorization system. If your nationality currently travels to Europe without a visa, ETIAS adds one step before your trip: a 10-minute online form, a €20 fee, and an authorization that stays valid for 3 years across 30 European countries.
ETIAS is not a visa. There’s no embassy visit, no interview, no document stack. Most applications are approved within minutes. It’s Europe’s equivalent of the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA — a security screening that happens before you board, not at the border.

The previously confirmed Q4 2026 launch was removed from the official EU ETIAS website in mid-July 2026, with a 2027 launch now the most likely outcome. A revised timeline is expected after eu-LISA’s September 2026 board meeting. You cannot apply until the system goes live.
How much does ETIAS cost?
ETIAS costs €20 per application. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to complete the application. The fee was increased from the originally planned €7 on July 17, 2025.
How many countries does ETIAS cover?
ETIAS covers 30 European countries — all 29 Schengen member states plus Cyprus. One ETIAS authorization covers all 30 countries and is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.
Does ETIAS apply to visa-required nationalities?
No. ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationalities. Citizens of countries that require a Schengen visa — including India, China, Nigeria, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Egypt, Thailand, Turkey, and South Africa — need a full Schengen visa application. ETIAS is not an alternative to the visa requirement.
