Do Mexicans Need a Visa for Europe in 2026?

No — and that isn’t changing. Mexican citizens have visa-free access to the Schengen Area, and ETIAS does not change that status.

What IS changing is that starting in late 2026, you’ll need to complete a quick online authorisation before your trip. The process is nothing like getting a US visa — no embassy visit, no interview, no supporting documents. It’s a 10-minute online form, a €20 fee, and approval within minutes. Your ETIAS is then linked to your passport for three years, covering all 30 ETIAS countries on every trip.

ℹ️ Bottom line: You can still visit Europe without a visa. You just need to complete a 10-minute online form and pay €20 (~$420 MXN) before you go.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a pre-travel screening system that checks visitors from visa-exempt countries — including Mexico — against EU security databases before they board a flight, ferry, or train to Europe.

It is not a visa. No embassy appointment, no supporting documents, no interview. It’s an online form that takes about 10 minutes, costs €20 (~$420 MXN), and is valid for three years of unlimited trips — as long as each stay respects the 90-day limit.

Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines check it automatically at check-in. No printout needed.

ETIAS vs. US Visa: Why ETIAS Is Much Easier

Mexico is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program, so most Mexicans know exactly what a full visa application looks like — embassy appointment, bank statements, long processing times, and no guarantee of approval. ETIAS is nothing like that. It’s fully online, takes 10 minutes, costs €20, and is approved within minutes for the vast majority of applicants.

How to Apply for ETIAS (Step by Step)

1 Go to the official EU ETIAS portal. The official website will be at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The portal opens in Q4 2026. Do not use any third-party site.
2 Enter your passport details. You’ll need a Mexican passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe.
3 Answer background questions. Criminal history, previous immigration violations, travel to conflict zones, basic health questions. For most Mexican applicants, every answer will be “no.”
4 Indicate your first country of entry. For informational purposes only — your ETIAS covers all 30 countries regardless of where you enter first.
5 Pay the €20 fee. Approximately $420 MXN. By credit or debit card. Under-18s and over-70s pay nothing but still need to apply.
6 Receive your decision. Most approved within minutes. A small percentage may require manual review up to 30 days. Apply well before travel.
⚠️ Scam Warning: ETIAS is not yet live. Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications for Mexicans is not legitimate. Only apply through the official EU portal once the system launches in Q4 2026.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

The 90/180-Day Rule for Mexicans

ETIAS doesn’t change how long you can stay. The existing Schengen rule still applies: up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area.

For Mexicans combining Europe with a UK stop, days spent in the UK do not count toward your Schengen 90-day total — the two systems are entirely separate.

Use our free Schengen Calculator to plan your days. For the full explanation see our 90/180-Day Rule Guide.

⚠️ EES is already live: Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched in October 2025. It records every Schengen entry and exit via biometric scan. Overstays are now tracked automatically.

Dual Citizens: Mexico + EU Country

Mexico permits dual nationality. If you hold both a Mexican passport and an EU or Schengen country passport — Spanish citizenship is common among Mexicans with Spanish ancestry — you do not need ETIAS. Simply enter Europe on your EU passport with no 90-day limit.

ℹ️ Spanish descent: Many Mexicans are eligible for Spanish citizenship through ancestry or the Democratic Memory Law. If you hold or qualify for a Spanish passport, you can enter Europe without ETIAS and without any 90-day restriction.

How Much Does ETIAS Cost in Mexican Pesos?

  • Adults (18–70): €20 (~$420 MXN)
  • Under 18: Free (application still required)
  • Over 70: Free (application still required)

How much does ETIAS cost in Mexican pesos?
The fee is €20, approximately $420 MXN. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to complete the application.

Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?

What if my ETIAS is denied?
