ETIAS for Japanese Citizens 2026: Complete Guide

Last Updated: March 2026

Starting in late 2026, Japanese citizens will need a digital authorisation called ETIAS before visiting most of Europe. If you’ve used Japan’s own landing card system or applied for a US ESTA, the concept is similar — a quick online form, a small fee, and approval linked to your passport.

Do Japanese Citizens Need a Visa for Europe in 2026?

No — and that isn’t changing. Japanese passport holders do not need a visa for short stays in Europe, and ETIAS does not change that. Japan consistently ranks among the world’s most powerful passports, with visa-free access to all Schengen countries.

What IS changing is that starting in late 2026, you’ll need to complete a quick online authorisation before your trip. The process is straightforward: fill out a 10-minute form online, pay €20 (~¥3,200), receive approval within minutes, and travel. Your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport — no printout needed.

ℹ️ Bottom line: You can still visit Europe without a visa. You just need to complete a 10-minute online form and pay €20 (~¥3,200) before you go.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a pre-travel screening system that checks visitors from visa-exempt countries against EU security databases before they board a flight, ferry, or train to Europe.

It is not a visa. There’s no embassy appointment, no supporting documents, no interview. When you apply, your passport details are automatically checked against databases including the Schengen Information System, Interpol, and Europol. For the vast majority of Japanese applicants, approval comes within minutes.

Once approved, your ETIAS is valid for three years and covers unlimited trips across all 30 participating countries — as long as each stay respects the 90-day limit.

ETIAS vs. US ESTA: A Familiar Concept

Many Japanese travellers are familiar with the US ESTA — the electronic authorisation required before visiting the United States. ETIAS works on exactly the same principle, applied to Europe instead.

How to Apply for ETIAS (Step by Step)

1 Go to the official EU ETIAS portal. The official website will be at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The portal opens in Q4 2026. Do not use any third-party site.
2 Enter your passport details. You’ll need a Japanese passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe.
3 Answer background questions. Criminal history, previous immigration violations, travel to conflict zones, basic health questions. For most Japanese applicants, every answer will be “no.”
4 Indicate your first country of entry. For informational purposes only — your ETIAS covers all 30 countries regardless of where you enter first.
5 Pay the €20 fee. Approximately ¥3,200. By credit or debit card. Under-18s and over-70s pay nothing but still need to apply.
6 Receive your decision. Most approved within minutes. A small percentage may require manual review up to 30 days. Apply well before travel.
⚠️ Scam Warning: ETIAS is not yet live. Any website currently claiming to process ETIAS applications is not legitimate. Only apply through the official EU portal once the system launches in Q4 2026.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

ETIAS covers 30 European countries — the 29 Schengen Area member states plus Cyprus. One authorisation covers all of them.

The 90/180-Day Rule for Japanese Travellers

ETIAS doesn’t change how long you can stay. The Schengen rule already in place still applies: up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area.

For Japanese travellers combining Europe with the UK, remember that days spent in the UK do not count toward your Schengen 90-day total. A 2-week trip to London followed by 2 weeks in France uses only 14 of your 90 Schengen days.

Use our free Schengen Calculator to plan your days. For the full explanation see our 90/180-Day Rule Guide.

⚠️ EES is already live: Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched in October 2025. It digitally records every Schengen entry and exit via biometric scan — fingerprints and facial recognition replace passport stamps. Overstays are now tracked automatically.

Dual Citizens: Japan + EU Country

Japan does not officially recognise dual nationality for adults — Japanese citizens who acquire a foreign nationality are legally required to choose one. In practice, some Japanese nationals do hold dual passports, but this is outside the scope of Japanese law.

If you travel on a non-Japanese EU passport, you do not need ETIAS. If you travel on your Japanese passport, ETIAS is required.

How Much Does ETIAS Cost in Japanese Yen?

  • Adults (18–70): €20 (~¥3,200)
  • Under 18: Free (application still required)
  • Over 70: Free (application still required)

Frequently Asked Questions

When does ETIAS start for Japanese citizens?
ETIAS is expected to launch in Q4 2026 (October–December). The EU has not announced an exact date. There will be a transition period during which ETIAS is available but not yet strictly mandatory.

How much does ETIAS cost in Japanese yen?
The fee is €20, approximately ¥3,200. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to complete the application.

Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt countries like Japan. As a Japanese citizen, you need ETIAS — not a Schengen visa — for short stays.

Do I need ETIAS for a stopover in Europe?
If your layover requires passing through border control in a Schengen country, yes. If you remain in the international transit zone, no ETIAS is required.

Do children need ETIAS?
Yes. Every traveller needs their own ETIAS regardless of age. Parents can apply on behalf of minors. Children under 18 are exempt from the €20 fee.

Can I work or study in Europe with ETIAS?
No. ETIAS covers short-term visits for tourism, business, and transit only — up to 90 days. To work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit.

Does ETIAS cover the UK?
No. The UK requires a separate UK ETA (£10, valid 2 years). A combined Japan → UK → Europe trip requires both a UK ETA and an ETIAS.

What if my ETIAS is denied?
You’ll receive a reason and can appeal. You may also apply for a full Schengen visa through a European embassy. See: Can You Be Denied ETIAS?
